"Illiteracy is a correlate of poverty and hunger"
Background: Amakor is a village-based community in Imo State, Nigeria. The population of the community is about 10,000 people. The people are predominantly Christians and their main occupation is farming. In Amakor community, Imo State, Nigeria, primary school education is a luxury, which many members of the community cannot afford. The only primary school which the community built in 1972 after the civil war in Nigeria is in a dilapidated state with the result that teaching is conducted now under the trees.

The environment under which learning is conducted is a health hazard. The pupils sit on bare floor because there are no seats. The school has no books and other teaching materials for effective teaching and learning. No student (past or present) from Amakor primary school has seen what computer looks like in this jet age. The quality of teaching that is conducted under this inhumane condition has contributed to the underdevelopment of the community.
Today lack of access to and poor primary education in Amakor community is contributing to crime, prostitution among teenagers, teenage pregnancy, poor eating habits, exposure to diseases such as Cholera, HIV/AIDS, Typhoid, Malaria and a breakdown in law and order in the community. These diseases have continued to devastate the community. Lack of education among the people has a correlative impact on young people being manipulated by politicians who use them as tools during elections.
The Humanity For Africa Foundation, Inc plans to renovate and equip the primary school in Amakor as a pilot program that will be used to promote education in rural communities of Nigeria. There are ten more communities in the area where we hope to expand because we believe this program will benefit other communities where the people share the same illiteracy and poverty experience: Uba, Isiozi, Amiyi, Achara, Ugbele, Umuele Ibele, Obeakpu and Obinwanne
